Art Deco Buildings in Southport
A stroll down Nerang Street in Southport reveals several beautiful Art Deco buildings. As one of the oldest suburbs on the Gold Coast in Queensland Southport has several excellent examples of Art Deco architecture. The grandest is the old Town Hall which is described in another post in greater detail.
Continue down Nerang Street from the Town Hall and you will discover the Cecil B DeMilles Hotel on the corner of Scarborough Street. With its long open verandahs above the awnings and the imposing round Art Deco facade it occupies the corner site like a grand old Hollywood starlet. From here Nerang street becomes a pedestrian esplanade.
A little further on is number 36 on the right hand side. Granton House has a well balanced and well presented classic Art Deco facade.
Continuing down on the left hand side is the former Birdcage Restaurant at number 3 Nerang Street. Formally known as the Spotted Tiger Restaurant the building facade is another classic Art Deco treat on Nerang Street and has been painted in a very Miami style which suits the area well. It is currently a Korean Charcoal BBQ restaurant.
